The Chairs of the German-Polish Friendship Groups of the Bundesrat and the Polish Senate met on 21st April 2023. Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer and Senator Beniamin Godyla met with other members of both friendship groups in Warsaw and also spoke with Marshal of the Senate Tomasz Grodzki.

"Authentic friendship offers the best guarantee of peace in Europe", Minister President Kretschmer commented with reference to the meeting. "The German-Polish Friendship Groups of the Bundesrat and the Polish Senate are sending an important signal here, particularly in the current context. Germany stands by Poland."
Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine was the main topic of discussion, along with scientific and cultural cooperation.

A close and trusting relationship

Close ties link the Polish Senate and the Bundesrat. Presidential-level meetings between the institutions have been organised on numerous occasions. The Marshal of the Senate is also a member of the Friendship Group. The first meeting of both friendship groups was held in Dresden and Berlin from 6th to 8th April 2022.

Parliamentary activities within the framework of the Weimar Triangle

In addition, the two second chambers also work closely with the French Senate within the Weimar Triangle framework. Their presidents also meet regularly in this format and members of the three second chambers discuss substantive issues in various specialist conferences. Exchange programmes for staff are also organised. In conjunction with the Bundesrat, the Polish and French Senates have also set up a job-shadowing programme for staff from the Ukrainian Parliament to help make the Ukrainian parliamentary administration fit for future EU membership.
